Accredilab is one of North America's leading DNA testing laboratories offering
low-priced bird sexing services to bird owners, breeders, veterinarians, professional
associations sanctuaries etc. Professional service at great savings!
The sex of a bird cannot be determined using external characteristics. A DNA test from
an expert DNA lab is the only accurate way to determine the difference between males
and females. The sex of birds is determined by the inheritance of sex chromosomes.
Females have the heterogametic sex chromosomes ZW, whereas males have the
homogametic ZZ. This sex-determining system is highly conserved in avians, which
include nearly ten thousand species.
Sex determination occurs at fertilization with the inheritance of the sex chromosomes
Accredilab's experienced technicians have perfected the science of using DNA to
determine a bird's sex. We can test every variety of bird species including finches,
cockatoos, parrots, lorikeets, raptors and many more.
We will determine the sex of your bird using feathers, two or three drops of blood or
eggshells from newly hatched birds. These methods are painless and do not harm the
bird in any way.
We will email a certificate showing the bird’s ID information and gender within
3 business days of receipt of the samples. (See sample certificate)

The best choice if possible is to clip the bird’s nail just enough to nick the vein and spot
a drop of blood on the blood card we have supplied, or the card form printed off your
computer.
The second choice is to collect chest feathers by using tweezers and grabbing the
feather at the base and then plucking. Plucked feathers from the chest must have a
follicle attached at the end. This follicle contains the DNA for testing.
Other feathers are not likely to contain sufficient DNA.
You can easily self-collect the blood and feathers by following our simple instructions.
You can print out all the blood cards you need directly from your computer, all that is
needed for feather samples are separate envelopes, and by self-collection you save a lot
of time. We are always available to guide you if there are any questions, just call us

Blood samples can be submitted on ordinary paper using the computer generated
sample cards available after payment
Each sheet printed will enable you to submit 10 samples and you may print as many
sheets as required. Allow sufficient time for the blood to dry on each card submitted
and ensure that ID information is included for every sample.
*We also accept blood cards from other laboratories.
Use the order form by clicking here, fill it out completely.
Samples can be returned in ordinary paper envelopes, one sample per envelope. You
can put the name or ID of the bird on the outside of each individual envelope.
Feather samples can also be returned in a normal paper envelope, please ensure there
is an ID on each envelope.
Select only medium sized feathers for plucking. The feather must be physically plucked
(molted feathers cannot be used for this test). Very small feathers located under the
wing or small chest feathers are not recommended. Pluck 4 --6 medium to large sized
feathers from the chest area of the bird and place them in an envelope.
FAQs
Results from both blood card and feather samples are equally accurate.
Blood can easily be collected by clipping the bird’s nail just enough to nick the vein and
spot a drop of blood on paper.
Chest feathers can be collected by using tweezers and grabbing the feather at the
base and then plucking.
A blood card sample usually contains more DNA than the feather samples; this in turn
makes the sample recollection for feathers higher.
Plucked feathers from the chest must have a follicle at the end. This follicle contains
the DNA for testing.
Molted feathers do not contain enough DNA for testing
Blood feathers do not contain enough DNA for testing.
Collecting Sample
Avian DNA Samples can be submitted in one of two ways: blood or feather.
Blood Sample:
Wipe the bird’s nail with an alcohol swab and let dry (5-10 seconds) and ensure that the
toenail clipper is thoroughly cleaned between birds.
Clip the nail short enough to allow bleeding (avoid clipping too high since this may be
uncomfortable for the bird). If blood is not present, gently squeeze the toe until blood
appears.
Allow a small amount of blood to bead up and carefully touch the corner of the card to
the blood bead (only one or two drops is required).
Allow the car to dry and place it into the envelope provided.
Feather Sample:
Select only medium sized feathers for plucking. The feather must be physically plucked
(molted feathers cannot be used for this test). Very small feathers located under the
wing are not recommended.
Pluck 4-6 medium sized feathers from the chest area of the bird and place them in a
zip-lock bag. Ensure the feather tip, which is attached to the skin, is present (white
coloration). Large feathers may contain some blood, which should be left on the
feather.
Note:
Sample only 1 bird’s feather at a time and put each bird’s feathers into a separate
container.
Some bird owners say that it is better to allow a third party (someone that the bird in
not familiar with) to perform this type of collection.
